U.S. Pauses Immigrant (Green Card) Visa Processing for 75 Countries

January 15, 2026

The State Department announced that they are pausing immigrant (Green Card) visa processing for 75 countries.

Immigrant visa processing applies to individuals outside the United States who make their applications for permanent residence through a U.S. consular post abroad.

At this time, it appears that these restrictions will affect "immigrant visa processing" only and will not apply to student and scholar visa categories (F, J, H-1B, O-1, TN, and E-3).

The visa processing pause will begin January 21 and will continue until the department conducts a reassessment of immigrant visa processing.
