International Spotlight: Junaid Ali Khattak

Which program/department are you in?

I am a Visiting Scholar at Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory.

What is your primary area of study or research?

Environmental Sciences.

Which country (or countries) do you come from?

Pakistan.

How long have you been in the U.S.?

Over four months.

Is there anything you’d like to share about your research or projects?

My Research is focused on the contaminants in the groundwater (underground) of Indus Basin Punjab, Pakistan. In our project, we tested over 20,000 groundwater wells for targeting safe aquifers for drinking water. Apart from gaining scientific knowledge during this campaign, I was lucky to experience Pakistan’s vibrant culture while traveling through the rural areas of the country.

What do you like best about living in the U.S.?

New York City is a dynamic place -- it might be the most diverse place in the world. There are plenty of wonderful places to explore, incredible museums, and great libraries (which are also architectural gems). In NYC, you can experience different cultures -- it’s up to you to decide what experience you want in the city.

What is the hardest thing about living here?

The hardest thing about living in New York is looking for NYC housing. Finding housing in the Columbia University neighborhood is especially difficult -- it’s better to make arrangements before you arrive.

What do you know now that you wish you knew before coming here?

I wish I knew more about NYC’s diverse eateries! Furthermore, I wish I knew about the commute and neighborhood before arriving.

Is there anything else you’d like us to know that hasn’t been asked?

All the visiting students and scholars should explore the campus -- particularly the libraries. Columbia has great libraries!
