International Spotlight: Mercy Orengo, Graduate Student at School of Journalism

Which program/department are you in?

School of Journalism.

What is your primary area of study or research?

Reporting on Science.

Which country (or countries) do you come from?

Kenya.

How long have you been in the U.S.?

In New York since July 2021.

Tell us about your experience in NYC thus far.

I was a journalist in Nairobi. Reporting during the pandemic awakened the realization that I needed to know more about how to report on science. This led to my application to the Columbia journalism school. I enjoy the many random nights that I meet with my journalism classmates and talk about the experience we had in our professional journey. I am discovering new things about journalism, and more importantly it has been a season to discover myself, develop new passions and unlearn some things. We are a decent mix of international students and I am enjoying the rich conversations we share. I am making new friends and stepping out of my comfort which has always been a loner.

What do you like best about living in the U.S.?

People have been very kind to me. Strangers have been so warm and accommodating, especially when I need to figure things out. Sometimes it is the simple things like how to use the subway; people have really been nicer than I expected. I also love the presence of walking lanes that makes it so easy for me to commute without worrying about the crazy NYC traffic.

What is the hardest thing about living here?

The cost of living can be high and it can also get a little lonely during the colder season when everyone wants to stay indoors.

What do you know now that you wish you knew before coming here?

I wish I knew that a few days before traveling, I should probably set up my American bank account. I should have booked an appointment with the bank and started the process early to avoid the hefty exchange rate conversions when using my local country card. I also wish someone had told me about how much Americans love cheese.
