Perspectives in Film and Anthropology: Women in Urban China and Teenage Girls in Brazilian Favelas The International Students & Scholars Office (ISSO), in celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Columbia Global Centers, is hosting an International Scholar Panel Discussion, in which two international scholars at Columbia will share their work with the academic community. SHIFTING IMAGES: Beijing Women in the films of Chinese women filmmakers since 2000 Liu Juan, film director, screenwriter and cinematographer, will present her research on the life and relationships of women in Beijing as portrayed in films since 2000 by women filmmakers. "SEXUAL VIOLENCE against teenage girls in Brazilian favelas: the meanings of violence, terror, suffering and the limits of the State" Caroline Parreiras, Post-doctoral Researcher in Anthropology, will discuss her current research that explores violence in Rio de Janeiro favelas and deals with gender and sexuality issues, intimacy, death, terror, suffering and the limits of the state.
