The Global Poets Series is a celebration through poetry of our diverse global community at Columbia, and is co-sponsored by the School of General Studies, the International Students and Scholars Office, the School of the Arts, and Columbia College. ABOUT THE POETS: SHOLEH WOLPE was born in Iran and has lived in Trinidad, U.K. and the United States. About her poems, The Poetry Foundation writes, Wolpes concise, unflinching, and often wry free verse explores violence, culture, and gender. A recipient of the 2014 PEN/Heim, 2013 Midwest Book Award, 2010 Lois Roth Persian Translation prize, among others, her publications include four collections of poetry, a play, three books of translations, and three anthologies. Wolpe s modern translation of The Conference of the Birds (W.W. Norton) by the 12th century Iranian mystic poet, Attar, has been hailed by Reza Aslan as timeless as the masterpiece itself. She is based in Los Angeles. www.sholehwolpe.com YUYUTSU RAM DASS SHARMA is a distinguished poet, translator, and journalist from Kathmandu, Nepal. Born in the Punjab at Nakodar, Yuyu is the author of ten books of published poetry including, A Blizzard in my Bones: New York Poems (Nirala Press), Milarepas Bones (Nirala), Space Cake, Amsterdam, & Other Poems from Europe and America, (Howling Dog Press); and a Nepali bilingual translation of Hebrew poet Ronny Somecks Baghdad, February 1991 & Other Poems. Yuyutsus poetry has also appeared in Poetry Review, Irish Pages, and Asiaweek. The recipient of key writing fellowships from the Rockefeller Foundation and the Ireland Literature Exchange, Yuyu also represented Nepal and India at the Poetry Parnassus Festival in London as a part of the 2012 Summer Olympics.
